It's Chihuahua Time!

The 2nd Most Popular Dog in the United States! Chihuahua!

Chihuahua History

The Chihuahua—named for the Mexican state that borders Texas and New Mexico—is the oldest breed on the American continent. Historians believe they evolved from a wild dog called the Techichi that was domesticated by the Toltecs in 9th century Mexico. Some even claim the modern Chihuahua originated from a cross between the Techichi and a hairless dog that came to North America from China via the Bering Strait. Chihuahuas were discovered around 1850 in Mexico, where merchants were selling them to tourists. They quickly became popular in the United States and were registered with the AKC in 1904.

Brushing And Bathing

  • Your Chihuahua will have either long or short hair. This factor will determine your exact course of action when grooming his coat. Short haired Chihuahua's do not need as much attention as long haired Chihuahua's. In fact, Chihuahua's are one of the easiest dogs to keep groomed.

  • Brushing your Chihuahua is important, even if his hair is short. You brush his coat to help keep it smooth and to aid in the natural shedding process. Short haired Chihuahua's need brushing on occasion, which usually means whenever they look as if they need it. Long haired Chihuahua's should be brushed more often, like once a week. You may find that you need to brush your dog more often if they shed quite a bit. You can brush your Chihuahua with a damp cloth or soft bristle brush.

  • Keep in mind that to of the most important aspects of keeping your Chihuahua healthy and well-groomed is brushing their teeth and trimming their nails. Please choose a reputable certified groomer to help:)
